In more detail

Article 27 of the General Product Safety Regulation requires the Commission to maintain a web portal enabling economic operators and providers of online marketplaces to provide, in an easy way, market surveillance authorities and consumers with the information the regulation requires them to submit. That portal is the Safety Business Gateway. It is the business-facing counterpart of Safety Gate: Safety Gate carries notifications between authorities and to the public, the Safety Business Gateway carries notifications from companies to authorities.

The provisions Article 27 refers to describe what has to go through it. Under Article 9 a manufacturer that considers a product it has placed on the market to be dangerous must immediately take corrective measures and inform the market surveillance authorities of the Member States where the product has been made available, giving details of the risk and the measures taken; importers and distributors have the corresponding duties under Articles 11 and 12. Under Article 20 the manufacturer, or the responsible person in the EU where the manufacturer is outside it, must notify through the gateway, without undue delay, any accident caused by a product that resulted in death or in serious adverse effects on health, including injuries and chronic effects, to the authorities of the Member State where the accident occurred. Under Article 22(12) online marketplaces must use the gateway to report dangerous products offered on their platforms and accidents they are informed of.

For a company this means having an account and an internal procedure ready before an incident occurs, since the deadlines run from the moment it learns of a dangerous product or an accident. The Commission is to issue guidelines on the practical use of the gateway (Article 27(2)).
