Methodology
- What Safety Gate is
- Safety Gate, formerly RAPEX, is the European Union's rapid alert system for dangerous non-food consumer products. National market surveillance authorities notify the European Commission of products that pose a serious risk and of the measures taken, and the Commission publishes the alerts weekly, on Fridays.
- What counts as an alert
- One alert published by the Commission counts as one alert, in the week of its first publication. Each record keeps the alert number, the publication week and date, the product category, the risk types, the notifying country, the country of origin, the risk level and the measures taken, as published. An alert with several risk types counts once per risk type in the risk figures, so those shares can add up to more than 100 %. Alerts updated by the Commission in a later report keep their first week and take the updated content; a refresh never creates duplicates.
- Where the data comes from
- The dataset is built from the weekly-report XML files the Commission publishes on the Safety Gate portal and lists on data.europa.eu (dataset "RAPEX — rapid alert system for non-food consumer products"). Every weekly report since week 1 of 2020 is fetched and normalised; no figures are estimated or interpolated.
- Update cadence and checks
- Alerts are fetched every Saturday, after the Commission's Friday publication, and aggregated per year, category, risk type, notifying country and country of origin. Every page shows the week the data runs through; if the newest report is older than 21 days, the page says so. After each refresh a spot check re-fetches ten random stored alerts and compares them with the official records.
- How to read the current year
- Figures for the current year cover the weeks published so far and are not annualised. Country names follow ISO 3166 (the Commission's "United Kingdom in respect of Northern Ireland" is kept as its own entry); product categories and risk types are the Commission's own labels, unchanged.
- Reuse
- The aggregation is free to quote and reuse with attribution to Conphora and a link to this page; the source data belongs to the European Commission. Every table is available as CSV, and the overview and every facet page also exist as JSON at the same address with a .json suffix.
