Safety Gate (RAPEX)

In more detail

Article 25 of the General Product Safety Regulation requires the Commission to further develop, modernise and maintain the rapid alert system for the exchange of information on corrective measures concerning dangerous products, named the Safety Gate Rapid Alert System. The system continues the Rapid Information Exchange System (RAPEX) established under Article 12 of the former General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC, which Article 20 of the Market Surveillance Regulation also uses for notifications of products presenting a serious risk under harmonisation legislation. Each Member State designates a single national contact point.

Under Article 26, Member States must notify through the system, within four working days, corrective measures taken by their authorities or by economic operators against dangerous products presenting a serious risk to the health and safety of consumers, and may notify measures against products presenting a lesser risk. The Commission checks each notification within four working days and forwards it to the other Member States, which in turn report their own follow-up measures. Notifications include the product identification, the risk and the measure taken, for example withdrawal from the market, recall from consumers or a sales ban.

Article 34 requires the Commission to maintain the Safety Gate Portal, giving the public free access to selected information from the notifications; consumers can also report products they consider dangerous there, and online marketplaces must register with it and link their interfaces to it. For a manufacturer or importer, a Safety Gate alert means that a product it supplies is subject to a measure somewhere in the EU and that the same product on its own market needs immediate attention. In Denmark Safety Gate findings are published for Danish businesses on the product-safety pages of the Danish Business Authority (Erhvervsstyrelsen), which took over the tasks of the Danish Safety Technology Authority (Sikkerhedsstyrelsen) on 1 January 2026.
