What it is
Safety Gate is the EU’s rapid-alert system through which national authorities exchange information about dangerous non-food products and the measures taken against them. Alerts are published, so it is also a public record anyone can search.
Why it matters for compliance
For a brand, Safety Gate is two things. First, it is where a product flagged as dangerous becomes visible across the Union, often triggering removal from sale. Second — and more usefully — it is free intelligence: the categories with the most alerts show where scrutiny is heaviest, and a competitor’s alert is an early signal to check your own equivalent product before an authority does.
How to use it
- Search it for your product categories and close competitors.
- Use the alert profile to decide where your programme must be most robust.
- Treat a relevant alert as a trigger to pre-emptively assess your own products.
Good to know
Rising alert numbers partly reflect more active, increasingly automated online surveillance — detection is broader and faster than it used to be, so the probability a non-compliant product is caught is higher.
