What it is
The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) is Malta’s authority for competition, consumer protection and standards. It houses the Standards and Metrology Institute (Malta’s national standards body and CEN/CENELEC member) and also carries out market surveillance of products on the Maltese market — so it plays two roles a brand needs to know.
Why it matters for compliance
For products sold in Malta, the MCCAA is both where you access the EN standards behind conformity and the authority that can check products, request documentation and act on unsafe goods. A standard’s legal weight comes from being harmonised (cited in the Official Journal) for the applicable legislation.
How to use it
- Access the relevant EN standards via the Standards and Metrology Institute.
- Keep your technical file and DoC ready for a market-surveillance request.
- Treat the MCCAA as the single Maltese contact for both standards and product safety.
Good to know
Malta combines functions that many Member States split across separate bodies, so the MCCAA is a one-stop authority for standards and consumer product safety.
