What it is
IPQ (Instituto Português da Qualidade) is Portugal’s national standards body and national metrology institution, and the Portuguese member of the European organisation CEN and the international body ISO. It publishes Portuguese standards and the Portuguese adoptions of European (EN) and international standards.
Why it matters for compliance
Conformity in practice means applying the right standard, and IPQ is where you access the EN standards your product needs for the Portuguese market. A standard’s legal weight comes from being harmonised (cited in the Official Journal) for the applicable legislation.
How to use it
- Find and access the relevant EN/NP standards for your product.
- Confirm a standard is harmonised and current for the applicable legislation.
- Pair it with Portugal’s market-surveillance authority, ASAE, for enforcement.
Good to know
IPQ also coordinates Portugal’s quality system, including metrology and licensing, alongside its standardisation role.
