What it is
AFNOR (Association française de normalisation) is France’s national standardisation body and the French member of the European organisation CEN and the international body ISO. It develops French standards (NF) and publishes the French adoptions of European (EN) and international standards.
Why it matters for compliance
Conformity in practice means applying the right standard, and AFNOR is where you access and buy the EN standards your product needs for the French market. A standard carries legal weight when it is harmonised (cited in the Official Journal) for your legislation; AFNOR is the practical French gateway to the texts and to standardisation work.
How to use it
- Find and purchase the relevant EN/NF standards for your product.
- Confirm a standard is harmonised and current for the applicable legislation.
- Engage in standardisation through AFNOR committees where relevant to your sector.
Good to know
Standards are commercial as well as legal currency — French retailers and procurement often specify them, so the same standard can be both a compliance tool and a customer requirement.
