What it is
SCIP (Substances of Concern In articles, as such or in complex objects/Products) is the ECHA database of articles containing substances of very high concern. It was established under the Waste Framework Directive so that information on SVHCs in articles is available to waste operators and consumers, not lost once a product is discarded.
Why it matters for compliance
If you place an article on the EU market that contains a Candidate-List SVHC above 0.1% by weight, you must submit a SCIP notification. It is a concrete, recurring obligation tied directly to the Candidate List: when the list updates, newly affected articles may need new notifications. It is one of the clearest examples of compliance being, at bottom, a data exercise.
How to use it
- Identify articles containing an SVHC above 0.1% w/w.
- Prepare and submit the SCIP notification with the required article and substance data.
- Re-check after each Candidate List update for newly in-scope articles.
