PEFC — Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification

PEFC is an international forest-certification scheme supporting responsible wood and paper sourcing through chain-of-custody certification.

What it is

PEFC (the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is an international forest certification scheme, endorsing national certification systems and offering chain-of-custody certification for wood and paper products.

Why it matters for compliance

For products containing wood or paper, PEFC supports a verifiable sourcing claim recognised by retailers and consumers, and complements supply-chain due diligence. As with FSC, it strengthens a sourcing story but is not itself a substitute for EUDR compliance where that applies.

How to use it

  • Use PEFC chain-of-custody to evidence responsible wood/paper sourcing.
  • Treat it as support for, not a replacement of, EUDR due diligence.
  • Use it behind sustainability and sourcing claims.

Good to know

PEFC and FSC are the two leading forest-certification schemes; either can support a sourcing claim, but verify the EUDR duty separately.
