What it is
The Batteries Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542) governs batteries and products containing them across the life cycle — from carbon footprint and recycled content to collection and recycling. It introduces a battery passport carrying data on a battery’s composition, performance, carbon footprint and supply chain, accessible via a data carrier.
Why it matters for compliance
Any brand selling powered products — from toys to electronics to appliances — is touched by it. The battery passport (expected from around 2027) is one of the earliest Digital Product Passports, so it is often a brand’s first practical encounter with structured, externally-accessible compliance data. A rechargeable toy, for instance, may eventually carry both a battery passport and a toy DPP.
How to use it
- Identify which products contain batteries in scope.
- Gather the supply-chain and performance data the battery passport will require.
- Build the data and identifiers once, as a capability several regimes will reuse.
- Track the staged application dates against the current text.

The battery passport is a preview of the wider DPP rollout under the ESPR — treat readiness as a reusable data capability rather than a one-off project.
