What it is
EUR-Lex is the European Union’s official, free legal database. It publishes the Official Journal, and the full text of regulations, directives, decisions and case law, with multilingual versions and historical revisions.
Why it matters for compliance
Compliance starts with reading the right text. EUR-Lex is where you confirm exactly what a rule says — not a summary or a third-party paraphrase. Two habits make it reliable: working from the consolidated version (which shows the law as it currently stands after amendments, not as first enacted), and citing a stable identifier (the ELI or CELEX number). For directives, EUR-Lex gives the EU text — but remember the operative law is each Member State’s national transposition.
How to use it
- Search by act number, title or CELEX/ELI to find a regulation or directive.
- Always open the consolidated text for the current version.
- Use it to verify dates, articles and definitions before acting on them.
- Follow directives through to the relevant national transposition.
Good to know
EUR-Lex is the primary source behind every “key regulation” link in this directory — bookmark the consolidated view of the texts that matter to your products.
