The Ecodesign Directive is the EU's framework for the environmental performance of energy-related products: the actual requirements sit in product-specific implementing regulations.
It applies to manufacturers, authorised representatives and importers of anything that affects energy consumption in use: lighting, power supplies, motors, fans, appliances, displays, servers and more.
Adopted in 2009, it was repealed in 2024 by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, but the existing implementing regulations stay in force until they are replaced, so they still govern most product groups today.
You identify the implementing regulation for your product group, meet its efficiency, standby, repairability and information requirements, test with the prescribed methods, keep technical documentation, self-assess without a notified body, and draw up an EU declaration of conformity with CE marking.
