ATEX is the EU product law for equipment that has to operate safely where flammable gases, vapours, mists or combustible dusts can be present.
It applies to manufacturers, importers, distributors and authorised representatives of equipment, protective systems and safety devices, in Group I for mining and Group II for surface installations. How the equipment is used at work is a separate directive.
The recast Directive has applied since 20 April 2016, replacing Directive 94/9/EC, through the national law of each member state.
You determine the group and category, meet the essential health and safety requirements, complete the conformity assessment for that category with a notified body where required, document the explosion-protection rationale, draw up an EU declaration of conformity, and apply the CE and Ex markings.
