The Outdoor Noise Directive controls how loud equipment used outdoors may be: binding limits for one group of machines, and a noise marking for all of them.
It applies to manufacturers, authorised representatives and importers placing in-scope equipment on the EU market, from lawnmowers and compaction machines to hoists, concrete breakers and welding generators.
Adopted in 2000, its requirements have applied since 3 January 2002, and a second, stricter stage of limit values took effect in 2005, through the national law of each member state.
You check whether the machine is limit-bound or marking only, measure the sound power with the prescribed method and set a guaranteed level, involve a notified body where limits apply, put the LWA marking next to the CE marking, and keep the declaration and documentation consistent.
