The Measuring Instruments Directive is the EU's framework for instruments whose measurements have legal weight: fuel pumps, electricity meters, taximeters and more.

It applies to manufacturers, authorised representatives, importers and distributors of instruments used for fair trading, taxes and duties, health, safety, the environment and consumer protection, in ten categories.

A compliant instrument carries the CE marking plus the supplementary metrology marking, the letter M with the year in a rectangle; each of the ten categories has its own annex, and the notified bodies are listed in NANDO.

You determine the accuracy class and essential requirements, follow a permitted conformity module with a notified body, keep technical documentation with an EU declaration of conformity, apply the markings and the notified body number, and check the national rules on installation and re-verification.
