The Food Contact Materials framework is the EU's overarching law for anything that touches food along the supply chain.

It applies to manufacturers, importers, processors and converters, fillers, packers and retailers, for packaging, utensils, equipment and anything expected to touch food, with a general safety principle for every material and specific measures for plastics, ceramics and others.

Adopted in 2004 and directly applicable, it works with Good Manufacturing Practice under Regulation 2023/2006 since 2008, and with material-specific measures such as the plastics regulation, which are amended regularly.

You identify the material group and its specific measure, meet the Article 3 safety principle, manufacture under GMP, issue a written Declaration of Compliance with supporting documentation, label the product for food contact, and keep traceability one step up and one step down.
