The Detergents Regulation is the EU's law for placing detergents and their surfactants on the market, coupling an environmental test with consumer information.

It applies to manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers of laundry and dishwasher detergents, surface cleaners, rinse aids, soaps and industrial cleaning products; the person who first makes a product available carries the core duties.

Its three pillars: surfactants must be ultimately biodegradable, phosphates are limited in consumer laundry and dishwasher detergents, and REACH and CLP apply alongside. A modernised Detergents Regulation is on its way.
